Ireland & the Shannon Region The Republic of Ireland is a small independent nation situated on the West Coast of Europe, with a population of over four million people, over 40 percent of who are under the age of 25. Ireland is beautiful – much of the countryside is still unspoilt providing an excellent natural habitat for a flourishing flora and fauna. Ireland’s landscape provides a rich environment for the many outdoor leisure pursuits for which it is famous. Water sports, hill walking, rock climbing and caving are just a few of the many activities, which can be enjoyed when needing a break from study. The country is famous for its genuine and traditional hospitality and the economy is currently experiencing an unprecedented boom with a well-developed manufacturing and international services sector. Ireland has a rich cultural heritage. Irish writer such as Wilde, Shaw, Joyce and Beckett have helped shape modern English; Irish musicians and singers including U2, Enya and Riverdance are celebrated across Europe and America. The Shannon Region provides the rural and safe atmosphere of Ireland’s west. The Region has great visitor attractions including castles, folk parks, show-caves, museums, water-worlds, sea-life centres, pet-farms, boat trips and much more. The Shannon Region is brimful of entertainment for people of all ages and ranges from Traditional Irish Music Pubs Programme through to mediaeval banquets, classical music, concerts, poetry readings, Irish Music nights, theatre, nightclubs and greyhound racing.
